Overview

William Ross State High School is transitioning to a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model for laptop devices.

A diminishing number of school-based devices originally funded by the National Computers for Schools Fund will continue to be provided; however they are approaching their 'end-of-life'.  Therefore we recommend that students BYOD if possible.

Note: There are a limited number of ageing devices available to students who may not be in a financial position to BYOD. However as these devices reach end-of-life, students will no longer have access to them.

BYOD

Bring Your Own 'Device' (BYOD) means exactly that: students bring their own digital device (laptop) to school, for the purposes of learning. So instead of using school-owned ICT (computers, laptops, printers and internet access via Wi-Fi), students will use their own laptop.

The BYOD concept recognises that students and their parents and caregivers would like to use the same digital devices at school and at home.  There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to implementing a BYOD program. In 2017, William Ross State High School is providing students with the opportunity to bring their own device.   Our BYOD program allows students to bring either an approved Mac or Windows device. Please refer the device specifications to check whether your device is compatible.

Minimum specifications

Refer to the 2018 BYOD Factsheet for minimum device requirements

Purchasing Your BYOD Device

Parents can purchase from your preferred supplier.

All warranty and service issues will be the parents’ responsibility. William Ross State High School has no involvement in these arrangements.

Mandatory conditions before accessing the school network

Students will be provided with the opportunity to connect to the school Wi-Fi network when the following conditions have been met:

1.  Download and read the BYOD Policy

2.  Signature and submission of BYOD Agreement form

3.  Obtain a device that meets the school's minimum specifications

Theft, security and damage

Devices are the sole responsibility of the student

The school accepts no responsibility for the security or safety of the device

Teachers and other staff will not store or hold onto a device, on behalf of a student

We recommend parents/caregivers to consider purchasing Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) insurance for the BYOD device, as the school does not provide insurance for BYOD devices.

Protection

Remember to protect your BYOD investment.

We strongly recommend that Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) insurance is purchased, as it covers damage from day-to-day wear-n-tear and other damage.

In addition, the BYOD device should be stored in it's carry case when not in use.

Roll out Schedule

The commencement of the 2017 school year will see the roll out of the BYOD initiative for all students.

Please note that dedicated computer labs with specialised software  will remain in the school until the existing fleet of devices reach their end-of-life.
